Many of us are dealing with body issues, comparing ourselves to others. Thinking this should be thinner, that should be thicker, this should be rounder, that should be tighter. With this pattern of thinking, we are feeding into a narrative of never looking good enough, never being enough.

My first ever self-portrait was of my naked body. Pure unaltered, uncovered me. Looking at the reference picture that I had taken, I started off a little apprehensively. However, once I began painting myself, I suddenly stopped judging my appearance. I stopped looking at my body in terms of ‘too big’s, ‘too little’s, ‘too masculine’s, ‘too feminine’s. All I saw were lines, and shapes, and colours, and shadows. Then, seeing my natural shapes so beautifully captured through structures, and contrasts and brushstrokes (bear in mind, I wasn’t an experienced painter at all), I realised what a cathartic experience this had been. I have since experienced this many more times, and I would love nothing more but to pass this feeling onto others. To help you step outside of your regular views and to see your body for the true beauty that it really is!

Where will it take place?

The workshop will take place in the bright and beautiful workshop space “By Our Hands We Make Our Way” in Steinton Market, Avenue C, Nottingham, NG1 1DQ.

Will this be a taught class?

During this workshop, I will serve as a facilitator and guide that is happy to provide (technical) help if requested by you. I want to give you the space to use painting as a medium for your own expression

Will I be painting from live or from a reference picture?

You will be painting from a reference picture that you will have taken before the workshop and brought with you (this may be on your phone, tablet or printed out).

How should the reference picture look?

For the full experience, I recommend taking a picture fully nude. You may pose in whichever way you feel most comfortable - my highest priority is for you to have a positive and safe experience, so you will set your own boundaries. You may want to take a few reference pictures to choose from on the day, depending on how you feel in that particular time and space (I’m happy to provide help in your choosing, but only if you ask me to. I will not impose).

How private is the event?

The workshop is designed for no more than 5 people. This is to allow for the necessary privacy and intimacy of this experience. It will take place in the secluded upstairs area of “We Make Our Way” to perfectly nurture our intimacy, vulnerability, and creativity.

Do I need to bring anything?

All materials will be provided. Please wear clothes, you don’t mind getting paint on. And please ensure to bring your reference picture!

Who can participate?

Anyone can participate, whether you have never touched a paint brush before or whether you are an experienced painter. You need to be 18 years old or over to participate.
